   architect, artist, theorist
   An important architect of the French Renaissance, Jean Bullant was born in Amiens and traveled to Italy around 1577. Upon returning to France, he worked for the duchess of Montmorency, probably on the château of Fère-en-Tardenois, and especially on the château of Ecouen; he built the chapel, as well as the porticos. He often built on a large scale, demonstrating his penchant for the monumental. He succeeded Philibert delorme as architect of the Tuileries (1570) and built there two pavilions. He also built, for Catherine de' medici in Paris, the mansion of Soissons (1570), of which only the astronomical column remains. Bullant published a collection, Horlogiographie, and Règle générale d'architecture (1564). Beyond the influence of the Italian Renaissance, Bullant sought inspiration in antiquity; and above all, influenced by Philibert Delorme, he became a mannerist, especially in the importance that he gave to decoration.
